Bike Safety Matters

We love the initiatives being taken to lead Cornelius to a more bicycle friendly town. Take note of the new bike safety laws in effect for NC and check out the article on the Town Board’s adopting of the Bike! Cornelius Master Plan in January 2017 here.

The town currently has 8.2 miles of bicycle facilities, including just over 2 miles of bike lanes and about 6 miles of greenways and side paths. The Bike Cornelius! plan recommends expanding these to a comprehensive network of bicycle facilities, all of which would total 97.4 miles

Bicycle Law Changes

Key Bicycle Law Changes Under House Bill 959 are now in effect. Drivers must follow these rules to lawfully pass a bicycle or moped in a no passing area: – You can only pass a bicycle or moped; – The bicycle or moped must be headed in the same direction as the vehicle; – The driver must provide at least four feet between themselves and the bicycle/moped or fully enter the left lane; – Don’t pass when the bicycle or moped is signaling a left turn. At night, bicycle riders must have: – A lighted lamp on the bicycle’s front visible from at least 300 feet, or – A red light on the back of the bicycle, or – Wear reflective clothing/vest visible from 300 feet.
