The YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s Response to COVID-19

For nearly 150 years, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte has had a prominent voice in our community. Their focus on youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living has supported countless people in their efforts to improve the world around them. That being said, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte is in a unique position, as their community is in greater need of support now, yet they have had to temporarily close all 19 of their locations. Because of this predicament, they have channeled their creativity to build new opportunities for community support, social-distancing-style.

First and foremost, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte has partnered with Atrium Health, providing free childcare to our healthcare heroes and other essential workers who are at the front lines of this pandemic. They have implemented social distancing policies at all facilities to ensure the safety of all involved.

The YMCA of Greater Charlotte is teaming up with CMS to provide meals to participants through the CMS Child Nutrition Services.

Additionally, the Lake Norman YMCA is working with SEECharlotte, an organization focused on building extracurricular and after school activities for blind and visually impaired children in the Charlotte area, to develop a summer camp program where these children can have fun and enjoy their summer! Thanks to community support and donations, SEECharlotte provides blind and visually impaired campers free tuition and transportation to join in on the fun activities at the Lake Norman YMCA this summer. By the end of the week, SEE Charlotte’s campers were conquering the obstacle course, kayaking, banana boating, and having a blast.

Although they have had to enforce temporary closures, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte is doing all they can to continue to support their employees through the Emergency Staff Relief Fund. This fund was initiated in March and has supported employees housing, medical, and transportation needs.

Lastly, the YMCA of Lake Norman has recently announced a collaboration with Bella Love, the events company behind the Drive-In Movies in Old Town Cornelius series. The YMCA of Lake Norman will serve as the new venue for the event, welcoming many Lake Norman residents for a new twist on a retro favorite all summer long.
